The number of activities to do around Santa Marta is abundant, thus making it a wonderful home base or jumping off point for all your northern Colombian excursions. When you need a place to relax and recoup, get your fix of city life or to just call home, you won’t find a friendlier welcome than here at La Brisa Loca.

In Santa Marta

-El Rodadero

Known by Colombians as mini Miami, El Rodadero is one of the coastal hotspots for seasonal vacationers. A quick 10-minute ride away, this popular swimming beach has been rated the number one favorite beach destination within Colombia. See and feel the energy of El Rodadero Beach packed to the brim. When the beach crowd starts to wane, don’t begin to think that your day at the beach is even close to over. Grab a bottle of rum, join the other beach revelers and enjoy a balmy evening by the sea listening to a myriad of live vallenato bands.

-Quinta de San Pedro

This is the house where the South American liberator Simon Bolivar spent his final days. La Quinta is also host to spectacular botanical gardens that allow you to escape the hot, Caribbean coast.

-Night Life

Once we finally kick you out of our bar, there are a diverse number of other bars and clubs to encounter the local species of night owls. With a condensed bar scene around Calle 17 and Parque de los Novios, you won’t even feel the need to go inside an establishment. Downtown Santa Marta thrives with everything from local salsa and vallenato bars, international rap and reggaeton influenced hotspots to South America’s best rock house.

-Mercado

Not rated as South America’s most colorful open-air markets, it could be regarded as the smelliest, with its aromatic combination of non-refrigerated meats, fish and Caribbean heat.

-Taganga

Once a quaint fishing village (and now a serious destination on the gringo trail) Taganga is known as one of the most popular destinations in the world for budget diving. This pueblo also proudly generates the highest ranked concentration per square meter of friendship bracelets. Taganga is where hippies go to make bracelets.

-Museo de Oro

It’s a museum. It’s got gold. And, obviously, it’s got a pretty creative name.

-La Catedral

This is the first cathedral in the Americas to begin construction, way back in 1564, and it is right here in Santa Marta and only a block away from La Brisa Loca.

-Casa de Aduana

Built in 1530, this customs house is the oldest in the Americas. The building now houses a great museum displaying the Tayronan culture.

-Lovely gardens of Juan Valdez

Sit next to the wonderful koi pond and enjoy one of Colombia’s finest brews. The amateur coffee drinker should stay away from the espresso - also known as Colombia’s second most powerful stimulant!

-Wreck Dives

Contrary to popular belief, Taganga does not have a monopoly on diving. Boats that leave out of the port, blocks from the hostel, will take you to all the great dive spots as far as Tayrona, often for less than the Tagangan companies. Great diving can even be found in Santa Marta Bay, with large coral formations around the El Moro Island and a number of easily accessible wrecks.

Around Santa Marta

-Tayrona

Tayrona National Park is one of those rare places that truly do live up to the hype. A pristine playground awaits travelers of all types, from the beach bum to the jungle trail masochist. Idyllic shorelines materialize as the prize from roughing your way through heavy canopy jungle, where you may encounter spider monkeys, armadillos and other animals you usually only see in a zoo. To experience some of the ruins of the abandoned Tyronan cities without slaving 5-6 days, take a day hike up to the city of Pueblito, 1.5 hours up an indigenous staircase from Cabo.

Buses leave every 15 minutes from the nearby bus station, and you can feel free to leave your backpacks here at the hostel while you’re off living the dream. Or we can arrange an air-conditioned bus to pick you up at our door.

-Lost City

If you’re looking for a bit more activity than relaxing in beach hammocks, try the 5- or 6-day hike to the Lost City of the Tyronan culture; an indigenous super city abandoned more than 500 years ago. Tour groups provide guides and food stationed along the route, but don’t let that fool you into thinking this is an easy stroll through the woods. Incredibly strenuous hiking through harsh terrain will leave you cursing yourself for leaving that hammock. If the climbs don’t get you, the mosquitoes certainly will. But in the end it’s worth every blister to be able to experience such nature, culture and history.

-Minca

After years of exploration in the hills of the Sierra Nevada, settlers finally found ideal coffee growing conditions just 30 minutes from the coast. Here the mountains climb steep and the temperatures drop fast. Don’t forget to pack your sexiest waterproof poncho. Escape the heat of the coast for as little as half a day. In the cool heights of Minca you can get a wonderful view over Santa Marta and the Caribbean coast. Short hikes take you to the many picturesque waterfalls and natural swimming holes.

-Bahia Concha & Bahia Cristal

If you’re looking for a quick trip to paradise, you don’t need to go all the way to the main Tayrona entrance. White sand beaches help you work on that tan, crystal blue waters that beg to be explored with a mask and snorkel, and plenty of vendors on foot looking to assist you with anything you may need, from beer to massages... for the right price of course.

Bahia Concha is accessible by taxi, but the only way you’ll find your way to Bahia Cristal is by a wet and wild boat ride that leaves out of Taganga.

-Polomino

About 75 km outside of Santa Marta, past Tyrona, find stretches of long Caribbean beaches, with enough real estate to make any plot of sand your personal paradise. And there is no better way to enjoy the warm sand beach than gazing up at the snow-capped Sierra Nevada Mountains. You can find any accommodation here, from luxurious cabanas to camping and hammocks.

-Guajira & Cabo de Vella
If you really want to get off the beaten track and away from any formal civilization, try a few days in the desolate region of La Guajira. Take a ride on the back of a 4X4 on some of the country’s worst roads in order to spend your time kicking back in a hammock hut, eating great seafood and watching the waves roll in. Cabo de Vella is also a very popular destination for wind sport enthusiasts.
